Chandeliers
74There isn’t many things you can call by one name anymore and get such a clear image in your mind about what they represent. Well, chandeliers are one of those things for many. Just the sound has an air of elegance or sophistication about it. You don’t need to be caught up in pretension or anything like this, they are just a very regal addition to any home. They used to be a standard lighting fixture in most homes built during the earlier part of the 20th century. They are quite common in larger estates and more notable in residences with some type of celebrity or royal status. However, the chandelier is making a big comeback on the home interior design front.
You will be surprised to learn where chandeliers are popping up inside (and outside) the home. They are being made with a variety of materials now as well, so if your tastes were once pushed away because of an ornate or ‘busy’ looking classic crystal chandelier, you might be into a more modern take on this classic beauty.
What Types of Chandeliers Are There
You can find a chandelier for almost any room in the house now. Literally, all rooms in the home are fair game for hanging a chandelier in, at least this seems to be true if you can trust all those home shows on TV. If you’ve never seen what a chandelier can look like in a bedroom, bathroom or even a closet, then you are in for a surprise. Really, there are mini chandeliers that can fit perfectly in a closet. Now, we’re not talking about a coat closet here, but the one where you would have your clothes. It doesn’t need to be some huge walk-in closet either, with a big wall-sized shoe rack. No, even a smaller closet that you can simply step into and have a bit of room to move can work fine.
This is similarly true for a bathroom. Not only can you hang a chandelier in your bathroom, but they create a great eye focal point when you’re in the bath or getting ready for work. Imagine seeing the light shine through your chandelier each morning and evening – makes you feel even more special. You can hang one of those same mini chandeliers mentioned for the closet or a slightly larger one in the bathroom. It is all about proportion. After all, you aren’t going to try to hang some big 4 foot diameter one in your 8 x 10 bathroom. You would be completely overpowered by it. And, you don’t even have to get a really ornate crystal one either. There are chandeliers that are made of plastics that can look great as well. In fact, there are some modern chandelier designs that use a type of plastic or glass pieces that look like crystals to give you the look without the price and weight of the originals.
There is another trend in home design and that is to take the indoors out. This has been an ongoing phenomenon and it is now taking the lighting industry even further down this path with it. Outdoor chandeliers are now the rage. You can have your patio cover decorated with all sorts of pendants, growing vines and now a chandelier if you want. These come in a variety of styles too. Some people prefer the rustic chandelier look, cabin rustic. These kinds are usually made of a polymer material that looks like bone and then they make antler chandeliers with them. You can also get wrought iron chandeliers which look great outside. They just have a natural way of working with the outdoor patio furniture and anchor your space more solidly. If you have an outdoor fireplace on your patio, then your chandelier will look even better with those flames flickering through the crystals.
What Do Chandeliers Cost
You can find a wide range of chandeliers from the smaller, closet styles we mentioned to the larger entrance and large dining room styles. The pricing is usually consistent with the size, however, you can find a mini chandelier made with genuine crystals for over $1,000. Most standard-sized crystal chandeliers will cost somewhere in the neighborhood of $250-500 USD. Larger models or styles with many more crystals or ornate designs can cost over $1,000 USD. Custom designed and hand forged chandeliers can also be made at your specifications and design preferences. For something like this, be prepared to spend several thousand dollars. Your finished product will truly be one of a kind and an heirloom piece.
